Each player in the game will be dealt 15 cards, and 3 cards will be discarded into a pile
separated from the play area. This pile is called the “kitty” or the “widow’s hand.” Three-handed Pinochle
has some elements of the Skat card game in it. The player who captures the lasttrick also gets ten points.

After winning each trick from the first 12 tricks, the players
score one meld and can even use melded cards to win tricks.
Traditional trick-taking rules are used for the last 12 tricks.
Optional rules for partnership Pinochle include forcing
the dealer to bid 190, or some other agreed amount, if
the first 3 players pass initially because they have no meld.
In another variation, the winning partnership must, before melding, exchange 3 or 4 cards
from each of their hands. If they do not, they subtract 1,000 points from their score.
This must be declared just before the tricks are
going to be played out. Some versions give the game to a team which successfully ‘shoots the moon’, others automatically give 250 points
for this no matter what the bid was.
After each trick, each player draws a card from the top of stock to restore hand to 12 cards.
After both players have melded, the game moves on to trick-taking.
The player who won the last trick leads the next trick
by playing any card from their hand. The other player must then follow suit if possible by playing a card of the
same suit. If they cannot follow suit, they can play any card from their hand.
